Long weekend plans around the country

The Hawkes Bay A&P Show

A&P (Agriculture and Pastoral) shows are always a family favourite. From prize winning livestock, dog trials and watching show jumping to farmyard petting pens for little ones and thrilling fairground rides for teens, there is something for everyone to enjoy. In some counties you’ll also see an impressive display of tractors, baking, preserves and vegetable competitions and maybe even a beer tasting tent for dad. Labour weekend sees the annual Hawkes Bay A&P Show held at the Tomoana Showgrounds in Hastings. A&P shows are an important part of our NZ rural heritage and are a fun day out that recognises and celebrates the contribution of farming to our community and our economy.

Piha Market Day

Located in the Auckland west coast settlement of Piha is Barnett Community Hall where every year the local preschool holds a Market Day. There are indoor and outdoor stalls and it is a popular destination on a sunny Labour Weekend Monday. You’ll find stalls selling everything from delicious food, salads and lunches to art, locally made preserves, seedlings, clothing and candles along with a range of kids stalls. A fun day out plus make sure to visit beautiful Piha beach for a walk or a swim while you're there. Piha Market Day is on Monday 28 October at Barnett Community Hall, North Piha from 9.30am until 2pm.

The Annual Wanaka Arts Exhibition

Get a dose of culture this Labour Weekend at the 45th annual Wanaka Arts Exhibition, the longest running and largest arts festival in Wanaka. Opening night is Thursday 24th October 2024 with an evening devoted to the arts. Enjoy live music with drinks and canapés, while getting a first look (and option to purchase) at this year’s fantastic works. The exhibition includes over 80 artists plus live demonstrations, special guests, artist talks and workshops. Celebrate the excellence and creativity of the region’s artists, with a diverse range of mediums on exhibit and for sale, including painting, photography, sculpture, woodwork, ceramic art, jewellery, fibre art, and more. Over 300 artworks will be available from artists across New Zealand. The Wanaka Art Exhibition runs from opening night on the 24th October until Sunday 27th October and is held at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Ardmore Street.
