House Rules NZ x Wallace Cotton

We’re excited to be involved in the first ever season of House Rules NZ, streaming on Three Now from Sunday 10 September. We worked in partnership with Warner Brothers to offer the teams Wallace Cotton vouchers to spend on bed linen, homeware and sleepwear to help style the homes they’re renovating each week.

The Rules of House Rules NZ

This high stakes home renovation show pits five teams of two against each other to win a grand prize of $100,000 towards their home loan, thanks to BNZ. Each week, one couple entrusts their home to their competition, who renovate it according to a set of rules decided by the homeowners.

One house will be the project each week. The owners move out while the remaining four teams will focus on completing the rooms within dedicated areas of the home. Rooms are divided into zones and these will be announced to the teams on arrival along with the crucial five ‘House Rules’ the owner has left behind. The challenge increases when teams share a zone as their individual designs may not necessarily work together for a cohesive result. The Auckland based teams have five and a half days to transform each house, with the results judged by design experts and the homeowners themselves.

Once all the houses have been renovated, the two lowest-scoring teams will be eliminated. The remaining teams work to transform house exteriors and gardens, and the highest scoring pair in the final week win the grand prize. With every home in the show being renovated by the homeowners 'rules’, each team walks away a winner. We’re looking forward to seeing their plans and designs come to life and how they style our products in the renovations each week.

The Judges and the Teams

House Rules NZ is hosted by Duncan Heyde, a Rock FM radio host. The teams are assisted by design expert Jade Hurst to make sure they’re following the design rules set out by the homeowners.

Every week the completed renovations are judged with points awarded to each team by the Judges and interior designers Michael Murray and Katrina Hobbs.

The five teams competing are Jemma and Alvaro, a newlywed couple from Glen Eden. Martinique and Andre, a couple from Ōtāhuhu. Theresa and Jarrad, cousins and best friends from New Lynn. Nikita and Sherwen, a couple from Howick. Char and Violet, a mother and daughter team from Murray’s Bay.

House Rules NZ Week 1

Week one of TV3’s House Rules NZ competition kicked off with four of the teams renovating Jemma and Alvaro’s home in Glen Eden. Teams were allocated their renovation zones within the house then spent the next five and half days transforming the home to meet Jemma and Alvaro’s ‘coastal Scandinavian’ design brief. Nikita and Sherwen had the second bedroom as part of their allocated zone. One of the highest scoring rooms, they styled our Loft Linen Duvet Cover Set in white with our Sovereign Velvet Quilt and matching pillowcases in toffee for a beautiful look and feel. House Rules NZ Week 2

Week two of TV3’s House Rules NZ competition saw four of the teams renovating Martinique and Andre’s home in Ōtāhuhu. Teams were allocated their renovation zones within the house then spent the next five and half days transforming the home to meet the design brief of Martinique and Andre. Nikita and Sherwen had the main bedroom as part of their allocated zone. Once again, one of the highest scoring rooms, they styled our Loft Linen duvet cover set in natural with our Sovereign velvet pillowcases in moss green and a white Classic Waffle Blanket for a cool and calm feeling. House Rules NZ Week 3

Week three of TV3’s House Rules NZ competition saw four of the teams renovating Jarrad’s home in New Lynn. Teams were allocated their renovation zones within the house then spent the next five and half days transforming the home to meet Jarrad’s design brief which included funky lighting, clever storage and a focus on family. Jemma and Alvaro had the main bedroom as part of their allocated zone. They styled our Reverie duvet cover set and a Sovereign velvet quilt in toffee with matching pillowcases, for a warm and inviting look. The combination of deeper moody hues and painterly botanical designs of the bedding delighted Jarrad. Shop the pieces they used this week to recreate their style in your own home.

House Rules NZ Week 4

Week four of TV3’s House Rules NZ competition saw four of the teams renovating Nikita and Sherwen’s home in Howick. Teams were allocated their renovation zones within the house then spent the next five and half days updating the home to meet a challenging design brief which included a monochromatic colour scheme and transforming their home to feel like a 5 star hotel. Jarrad and Theresa had the main bedroom as part of their allocated zone. They styled our Monarch duvet cover set with white embroidery detail and matching oxford pillowcases with a Unity quilt and matching Unity European pillowcases. The classic white palette offered a sophisticated look for the 5 star hotel feel Nikita and Sherwen had asked for. Jarrad and Theresa chose a duvet cover in a size bigger than the bed for an added touch of luxury. Shop the pieces they used this week to recreate this style in your own home.

House Rules NZ Week 5

Week five of TV3’s House Rules NZ competition saw four of the teams renovating Char’s home in Murray’s Bay. Teams were allocated their renovation zones within the house then spent the next five and half days updating the home to meet the design brief left by Char. Her very specific house rules included ‘think Byron Bay with a mid-century twist’ and to use natural textures along with creating a kitchen fit for a celebrity chef. Martinique and Andre had the main bedroom as part of their allocated zone. They styled our Loft Linen duvet cover set in natural with matching pillowcases, a Havelock Throw in stripe and Terrace Linen cushions. Unfortunately, they forgot to purchase pillow inners in the rush to complete all of their rooms. Andre built a small bench seat in the main bedroom on which Martinique styled two of our Harvest Seat Pads. The natural fabrics and colours of the pieces Martinique and Andre chose met Char’s brief of using natural textures. Shop the pieces they used this week to recreate their style in your own home – just don’t forget pillow inners!

House Rules NZ Week 6

The end of Week five saw two of the teams (Jarrad + Theresa and Nikita + Sherwen) eliminated after final scores were delivered by the judges. Week six of TV3’s House Rules NZ competition is ‘Redo’ week. The three remaining teams of Jemma + Alvaro, Char + Violet and Martinique + Andre were tasked with ‘redoing’ two of the rooms in their own homes – the living area and main bedroom. The new house rules apply to all three teams and include a tight budget, a 72 hour renovation deadline, the team always remaining together and the requirement to transform these spaces to meet the original design brief of their home. The teams worked hard to complete their rooms with fresh paint, swapping out furniture and restyling existing pieces. Jemma + Alvaro scored the first 10 of the competition based on their beautiful main bedroom. They styled our Loft Linen bedding in natural with Mariner standard pillowcases, Sovereign velvets in toffee, a Terrace cushion cover and a Dorset Cotton Throw in natural.

House Rules NZ Week 7

The end of Week six saw Char + Violet eliminated after final scores were delivered by the judges. Week seven of TV3’s House Rules NZ competition was ‘Outdoor’ week. The two remaining teams of Jemma + Alvaro and Martinique + Andre were tasked with making over each other’s front gardens. Each team could set their own rules for their gardens and were given five days, a $20,000 budget and a $20,000 garden centre voucher. The judges were very impressed with the final outcome and scored both teams highly. The two teams had to score the work on their gardens and awarded each other 10 out of 10. Jemma + Alvaro’s final score was only one point more than Martinique + Andre, making Jemma + Alvaro the winners of the competition. They generously decided to share the $100,000 prize by offering $20,000 to Martinique + Andre.
