Wallace Cotton Journey by Timeline

The Wallace Cotton Journey by Timeline: From Small Beginnings

Bill and Paula Wallace and a small talented team had a textile design, source and supply business in Auckland, supplying well-known retailers with house branded bed linen, plus supplying small retailers with Wallace Cotton designed cushions and bed linen.

In early 2005, Paula and Bill decided it was time to turn Wallace Cotton into a catalogue and online retail brand, offering bed linen, homeware and sleepwear. The choice of catalogue and online retail was due to experience working with other catalogue retailers in the Australasian market and seeing that online retail was growing year by year. The initial plan was to be purely online with a mail order catalogue to market the brand. The biggest challenge was building a quality customer base to mail them to.

Late 2005 The First Catalogue

The first Wallace Cotton catalogue was posted on 10 November 2005 to a few hundred people consisting mainly of friends and family. Response to the catalogue was really positive. The combination of stylish, quality bed linen marketed directly to customers proved the concept worked and sales grew organically through word of mouth, while the second season was quickly designed and produced.

At that stage Wallace Cotton was housed in a small warehouse and offices in Enterprise St Birkenhead. It soon became obvious that customers were keen to see and feel the quality, so the decision was made to move uphill to a larger old warehouse which had the makings of a store in front.

2006 The First Retail Store opens in Birkenhead, Auckland

The first Wallace Cotton store opened at 7 Enterprise Street in Birkenhead, Auckland. The store was tiny, about the size of a single bedroom, and was staffed by the office team plus some young nieces. Customers loved coming to the store and word spread faster with new customers signing up to receive the catalogue after seeing the ranges. Within two years, it was apparent that the store was not big enough, so the offices were moved out into the warehouse to allow for the store to be greatly expanded.

Warehousing was done by hand in those early days, with stacks of cardboard boxes on a wooden floor, no pallets or fork hoists, and when a delivery truck arrived, everyone from the office and store would be on hand to unload boxes. Product photos were taken in the store or lunchroom, and the energetic team of 7-8 helped with designing and developing ranges, ordering, marketing, seasonal photo shoots and working in the store. Inspiring photo shoot locations were found through friends and family, while local hairdressers, café workers, dancing teachers, plus everyone’s kids were roped into model, plus anyone from the office or family who looked particularly fetching at the time.

2009 A Second Retail Store opens in Newmarket, Auckland

An opportunity arose in late 2008 to open a retail store in Newmarket, just as the Global Financial Crisis hit and the stock market crashed. Big breaths were taken and many fingernails were chewed as the Newmarket store opened on 10 January 2009 and slowly built a local customer base and sales grew. The store had a fabulous retail team and was supported by stock deliveries in the GM’s car until a van was purchased. The Wallace Cotton van was (and still is) a very useful tool, and was used to deliver stock and furniture to the store and customers, plus was loaded up with samples, props, enormous palms, and crew, and taken all over the countryside on location for seasonal photo shoots, often breaking down in unlikely places with no cell phone coverage.

Wellington Store opens 7 October 2010

Bill and Paula fell in love with the old bank building in Wellington so opened a store in the arcade in 2010 just in time for the annual WOW show. The design team made up outfits using seasonal velvet quilts and prints, then hung them in the window that year. In more recent years, they arranged design students to dress the window for this incredible event, and held a competition for fashion design students and graduates to use seasonal fabrics to create an outfit, which was lots of fun and brought out some amazing talent in the young designers.

Ponsonby Store opens 1 November 2012

The Ponsonby store is located in Ponsonby Central. It was a great project, working with the landlord who had an amazing vision to create a permanent marketplace-style retail complex using an old warehouse on a prominent Ponsonby corner site. With lots of great food providers, flower stalls, fashion designers and a mystic palm reader, Ponsonby Central oozes charisma and is a great spot for Wallace Cotton.

Takapuna Store opens 14 August 2013

The opportunity to open a store in the beach side suburb of Takapuna was an easy decision. Aligned with their brand based on creating beautiful pieces to enhance a relaxed lifestyle, the new Wallace Cotton Takapuna location on Hurstmere Road was perfect.

New Head Office, Warehouse and Apollo Store opens 6 November 2013

By 2013, the head office and warehouse were bursting at the seams, so the decision was made to look for a new home for Wallace Cotton. After much searching, a suitable building was found to house the office, warehouse and a new store in Apollo Drive, Rosedale on Auckland’s North Shore. As usual, the space seemed enormous when empty, then soon enough the warehouse filled with brown boxes, and the offices filled as the team grew to support new stores and the consistently expanding customer base. The Apollo Drive store was a good spot for an annual warehouse sale, which was so well received, it was necessary to have one of the web team out in the car park wearing oven gloves to guide the traffic!

Napier Store opens 10 December 2014

Napier was chosen as the location for our second store outside Auckland city, because we love Hawkes Bay, and our growing customer base in the area kept asking when we were going to open a store close to them. On a visit to Napier, Paula enquired with the tradesmen who were completing a beautiful renovation of an old building on Tennyson Street, that once housed the office and printing press for the local newspaper. Discussions began with the owner, and 39 Tennyson Street soon became the Napier home of Wallace Cotton.

Cambridge Store opens 2 September 2015

Cambridge was another heartfelt decision, after searching around the lovely village of Cambridge for a good store site, Bill and Paula discovered an old hall that was to be cleared out, and took it on as the next Wallace Cotton store. With shiplap walls, and an original timber floor, it was an easy and fun store to design and fit out, and has since developed into a popular destination in a great village.

Northwest Mall Store, Auckland opens 1 October 2015

A beautiful retail space was leased in the brand new Northwest Mall. However, the proposed housing and further retail development in the area was slow to take off. And despite growing a loyal local customer base, it was unfortunately no longer viable for this store to remain open and it was closed on 2 August 2020.

Christchurch Store opens 9 March 2016

The call of the South drew the team to Christchurch, where a re-developed building in the leafy suburb of Merivale was being built. Our largest store at that stage, it showcased our beautiful range to our loyal Christchurch customer base.

2018 Overseas Growth

After years of looking at offshore opportunities, the Wallace’s decided to have a go at the UK retail market and set up business in London. Luckily there was a tribe of talented nieces based in London, so Wallace Cotton UK was set up as an online business initially. Exactly as happened in New Zealand when Wallace Cotton began in 2005, customers began asking where they could go to see the range, so a pop- up retail store was opened in Covent Garden, followed by a second pop up in Battersea. The Battersea store became the permanent location for Wallace Cotton in London in 2018. The talented nieces lived in the flat above and networked within the local village to build a loyal following. Unfortunately, the winds of change were afoot, and the combination of Brexit and a pandemic changed the retail landscape in the UK, so the difficult decision was made to close the store in 2022.

New Head Office, Warehouse and Rosedale Store opens 10 November 2021

After outgrowing the Apollo warehouse and head office, Wallace Cotton moved to a brand new, purpose-built premises in Parkway Drive, Rosedale in Auckland. The new premises include a spacious and modern head office, a much larger warehouse and the beautiful flagship Rosedale store. The new building also includes a bespoke in-house photography studio. The Rosedale store officially opened during the four-month Auckland covid 19 lockdown on 12 October 2021, only offering a click and collect service initially to comply with the Government’s covid policy.

Takapuna Store relocated and opens 19 August 2022

The long term lease at the Wallace Cotton Takapuna store came to an end so this opportunity was used to find a new location within Takapuna and design a brand new, bespoke store. The new store sits in a prominent corner location within a newly renovated building just up from Takapuna beach.

Mount Maunganui Store opens 2 September 2023

After offering a small selection of Wallace Cotton products through another homeware store in Mount Maunganui, the perfect opportunity arose for a stand-alone store at the Mount. Located in the main street at 118 Maunganui Road, the new store required a complete transformation from its previous life as a restaurant. Now beautifully representing the brand, the new store will be serving up the full Wallace Cotton experience to lovely customers from the Mount, surrounding neighborhoods and nearby Tauranga.

2023 The Wallace Cotton Team

After beginning in late 2005 with a small but passionate team, Wallace Cotton now currently employs a talented and loyal team of more than 60 people across the retail and support office locations.

In March 2023, new General Manager, Damian Dobb was appointed to continue the Wallace Cotton journey. After more than 17 years at the helm, Bill and Paula Wallace have stepped back to enjoy life as directors of Wallace Cotton, with a little more time to fulfil their passions of sailing and travelling.

2nd Wellington Store in Te Aro opens 2 November 2023

Store number ten and the second Wallace Cotton store in Wellington has opened in Te Aro. The current Wellington store is located in the Old Bank Arcade on Lambton Quay and will continue to serve foot traffic and visitors to the windy city. The larger location of the second Wellington store in Te Aro provides the opportunity to hold more stock and deliver the full Wallace Cotton experience to locals, with easy car parking nearby. Located at 27 College Road in Te Aro, the new store is beautifully situated amongst other luxury lifestyle brands, offering destination shopping for customers in Wellington and surrounding areas.

Lambton Quay Store Renovated June 2024

Established in late 2010, the Lambton Quay store was more than ready for a renovation to bring the store up to date and more in keeping with look of newer Wallace Cotton stores. The Lambton Quay store is located in the Old Bank Arcade which required working within the quirks of an older building and being respectful of the historical aspects. In a whirlwind renovation, the store was emptied of all stock and existing fittings. Then new fittings and product shelving were installed along with new changing rooms, a new counter, lighting and a fresh coat of paint. A huge team effort saw the store restocked, beautifully styled and ready to open to customers in just eight days.

Queenstown Store opens 24 August 2024

After many years of waiting for the right time and the perfect location to present itself, Wallace Cotton has arrived in Queenstown. Located at the Remarkables Park Town Centre, the Queenstown store invites locals and international visitors alike to experience the Wallace Cotton brand in person, showcasing products and offering inspiration for beautiful living. The new store was transformed to meet the brand design aesthetic and to incorporate the local surroundings.

“We approach each store design with a focus on local relevance. For our Queenstown location we have integrated elements that nod to the area’s natural beauty – in the colours, materials and textures used, all while balancing the brands signature aesthetic. The result is a space that resonates with the local community. We wanted to create a shopping experience that feels both familiar and exceptional.” Damian Dobb, GM Wallace Cotton
